emperors and members of the imperial family,built for pleasure and to impress,and the more intimate gardens created by scholars,poets,formergovernment officials,soldiers and merchants,made for reflection and escape from the outsideworld.They create an idealized miniature landscape,which is meant to express the harmony thatshould exist between man and nature.A typical Chinese garden is enclosed by walls and includes one or more ponds,rock works,treesand flowers,and an assortment of halls and pavilions within the garden,connected by windingpaths and zig-zag galleries.By moving from structure to structure,visitors can view a series ofcarefully composed scenes,unrolling like a scroll of landscape paintings.2.Chuin Tung(童寓):Chuin Tung(童宵):(1900-1983)a great architect and instructor of architecture in modern China.Having graduated from Qinghua University in 1925,he went abroad to study architecture atPennsylvania University and obtained a master degree of architecture in 1928.In 1930 he returnedto China after making an investigation in Europe.From 1932 to 1952,he participated in designingover 100 building projects.In his late years,he devoted himself to research on classical
