He led an orchestra, played the piano and composed over 2, 000 pieces of music. Duke began his life as Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D. C. He was nicknamed by a classmate who admired him. This nickname was proper for Duke because of his elegant and proud manners. Even as a child, Duke had fans. Dukes parents got him in piano lessons when

      2、 he was in primary school. Duke was very afraid of his lessons and preferred to play baseball instead. He grew bored with practising and gave up his lessons. Duke didnt become interested in learning the piano again until he was a teenager. Duke often joked that he learned to play the piano to attract girls. While washing dishes for his summer job, Duke met a waiter who invited him to go and see ragtime(an early form of jazz)pianist, Harvey Brooks. Brooks played ragtime in a way that did not foll

      3、ow the rules of classical piano musiche had freedom to change the rules and express himself more freely. Duke discovered that he wanted to make his own music too and then he taught himself how to play the piano like Harvey Brooks. He practised until his fingers could fly and even arranged melodies as he played. Soon Duke began playing for his high school dances. When he was 19, he started playing at parties and dance halls. Duke then moved to New York. There he played in different jazz clubs, sa

      4、loons and dance halls. Soon he was leading his own band, the Washingtonians at the Kentucky Club, located in Times Square. In 1927, after giving a performance at the Cotton Club, he began to produce sophisticated(高水平的)arrangements of his own. He toured the world with his orchestra and composed thousands of songs. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something with an attitude of gratitude and positive thinking, I took out a

      9、stone. And now look at your backpacks. ”We did. They were full. “I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in a backpack. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind is. A positive thought, however, cancels out a negative one. So look at those bags and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things. ”This little lesson was one of the most important I ever had.
