The first immigrants were Europeans, and they arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. They arrived from England on a ship named the Mayflower to escape religious persecution (迫害). The first European immigrants formed thirteen colonies (殖民地) under England. The thirteen colonies were not happy with the mother country, England.
