The Pleasures of Reading 阅读的乐趣All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books, but we must know how to avail(利用) ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most from it. 历代积淀下的智慧，几个世纪以来启发人们的故事，每个人都可以轻而易举地从书本中学到，但是我们还必须要知道如何将它们发挥到最大价值，如何从中获得更多。I am most interested in people, in finding out about them. Some of the most remarkable people Ive met existed only in a writers imagination, then on the pages of his books, and then, again, in my imagination. Ive found in books new friends, new society, and new words.我对人是很感兴趣的，乐于深入地发现人的本质。我知道的人中那些让我印象深刻的仅存在于作家的想象中，然后出现在他们的作品中，之后，再出现在我的想象里。在书中，我发现新的朋友，新的社会和新的世界。Reading is the pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the authors or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.阅读是思想上的愉悦，有点像是运动：你的欲望，知识和速度使你成为一个好的读者。阅读是有趣的，不是因为作者给你讲些什么，而是因为阅读使你的思想动起来。你自己的想象力跟随着作者的一起舒展，甚至比作者的走的更远。你的经历在和作者的经历比较之下会带给你与之相同或者不同的结论，当你理解了他的想法，你也就拓宽了你的想法。Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something. They are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.每一本书都是独立的，就像是一个家庭，住在自己的房子里，但是图书馆里的书就像是城市中的许许多多房子。虽然他们彼此是独立的，但是他们放在一起就互相补充着。他们互相之间有所联系，并且与其他的城市相联系。相同的观点，或是临近的观点，在不同地方出现；人类生活中的各种重复不断出现的问题在文学中也重复不断地出现，但是在不同时代的不同作品中就会有不同的解决办法。Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate (集中) on books somebody tells you " you ought" to read, you probably wont have fun. But if you put down a book you dont like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time - and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you wont have suffered during the process.如果你只希望阅读带给你愉悦，那么它就只能是愉悦的。如果你只关注那些别人告诉你“应该看”的那些书，你或许不会获得愉悦。但是如果你放下自己不爱看的书，试着换一本，直到发现一本对你来说有意义的书，放松地去看，你就会很愉快，如果，由于读书，你变得更好，更智慧，更善良，或是更绅士了，那么你就不会再觉得阅读的过程很折磨了。
